Dial An Applianceman is a locally owned company operating in Edmonton for over 40 years.  Our journeyman technicians are trained to install, repair, or replace your garbage disposal. Installing a garbage disposal is a great idea. It helps remove food and debris from your garbage, helps to simplify doing the dishes, an environmentally conscious approach to organic waste and it is very affordable and reliable. Our technicians will come with the right parts to repair or clean your garbage disposal.

There are two types of garburators in the market. Batch feed and continuous feed. The most common type is continuous feed. These garburators require a switch that will turn the unit on and off to break down the food while water is poured down. A batch feed garbage disposal does not have a switch. These require a switch that will turn the unit on and off when water and food scrapings are being poured down. Another important feature to look at when replacing a garburator is the horsepower. Call our knowledgeable sales staff to discuss your garburator needs.

A garbage disposal unit (often referred to as a waste disposal unit, garbage disposer, or garburator) is an electrically powered device that is positioned beneath a kitchen sink between the drain and the trap. The disposal device shreds food waste into small enough bits which allow it to flow through the pipes. Garbage disposals are popular in households due to their convenience; in many situations, dishes may be washed straight into the sink rather than the garbage bin. When crushing food into the garbage disposal, you should always use a little cold water to help break up the food easier.

Because food does not decay in the trash can, using a garbage disposal helps to reduce smells in garbage cans. This can result in a large amount of food waste being left to rot in the garbage for homeowners who have bi-weekly or monthly garbage pickup. Wild animals may be drawn to the stench and rip through the garbage in search of discarded food. Some steps our technicians will do when installing a new garburator is to wire the disposal, inset the drain flange, install the mounting ring, mount the disposal, connect the outlet to a P-Trap and finally tighten fasteners and test for leaks before leaving. Before any work is done the power at the circuit breaker must be turned off.

Some common issues with garbage disposals we encounter is that the garbage disposal not working, does not turn on, makes noises, leaks, has a bad odor, jammed, won’t drain, or drains very slowly. If the machine is humming when you switch it on but does nothing else there is something stuck inside. You may need a tool to unclog the unit from the bottom. Turn off the power and look for the hole at the bottom of the shaft in the centre. With the POWER OFF, insert the tool and spin it in both directions. This should clear up whatever was causing the snag. In the worst-case scenario, you’ll have to take the device apart and turn it upside down to clear the debris.
