LG Front Load Washer Not Draining: How to Avoid Clogs and Save Time

Another frequent issue we see is front load washers not draining properly. This was the case for a customer whose LG washer had stopped draining altogether. Upon inspection, we found that a small coin, lint, and a hair tie had clogged the drain pump. The repair was simple but critical: we removed the debris, cleaned the pump, and got the washer back in service. We also took this opportunity to remind the customer about the importance of cleaning the washer filter regularly to avoid similar problems in the future. This case highlights the importance of checking for small blockages that can cause big problems down the line.

LG Front Loader Washing machine error codes

Our team is trained to recognize and resolve these common LG error codes efficiently, so your appliances are up and running again in no time.

Error Code(s) Description Potential Solution
OE OE error code indicates the washing machine is unable to drain the water used during the wash cycle. An OE error code can be caused by a kinked drain hose or a clogged drain pump filter. 1. Check for kinked drain hose.
Check behind the washer to ensure that the drain hose is not kinked or clogged. If any of the clogs have been removed, or the kinks in the drain hose have been straightened; run a spin cycle to confirm that the OE has been resolved.2. Test the drain pump.
If the drain hose is not kinked, run a spin only cycle to test the drain pump.

  1. Press the POWER button to turn the washer ON.
  2. Press the SPIN SPEED key until HIGH is selected.
  3. Press the START/PAUSE button to start the SPIN ONLY cycle.
  4. Listen to hear a humming sound which indicates that the drain pump motor has started working.

3. Listen for a humming sound.
During the test above, a humming sound, and possibly the sound of water draining will be heard for the first 15 seconds.

IE IE (Water Inlet Error) error occurs if the water fails to fill the tub to an adequate level within a specified period.

Causes and Symptoms

  • Water is cut off, the faucet is turned off, or the water supply hose is not connected.
  • The water supply hose is pressed or bent.
  • The water supply hose is frozen because of cold weather.
1. Check that the water supply hose is connected to the faucet.

If the water supply hose is connected, check whether the faucet is properly open. If it is closed, turn the faucet anti-clockwise to open it.

2. Washing operation may cause the machine to move due to vibration, which may cause the water supply hose to become bent.
Unfold the water supply hose to ensure good water flow inside the hose. If the hose is bent, turn off the faucet, separate it from the washing machine and unfold it.

3. If the drainage hose or the faucet is frozen, water cannot get into the tub. Check if the faucet is frozen.

UE, Ub Certain load types may not distribute the weight of the load evenly, resulting in an unbalanced load and the uE/UE code. Rearrange the items in the drum, and restart the cycle.
CL CL is not an error code, but an indicator that the child lock feature is active. When the child lock feature is active, the control panel is disabled, and settings cannot be adjusted. To activate or de-activate child lock:

  1. Ensure the unit is powered on.
  2. Press and hold the child lock button for 3 seconds.
LE LE error code is displayed when the tub fails to spin. The error code indicates that the motor can’t operate properly because you’ve overloaded the washing machine, or a foreign object is stuck in the tub. Unplug the power cord, wait 5 minutes, and try the cycle again.

If you overload your washing machine, the tub may not spin because the motor is strained.

Is there a coin or foreign object stuck in the tub?

  1. Unplug the washer for 10 seconds.
  2. Plug the washer back in and attempt to run a cycle.

Do not add more than the manufacturer’s recommended amount of detergent. Reduce the amount of detergent until there is no more sudsing.

LG dishwasher error codes

Error Code Description Potential Solution
bE Indicates the use of improper detergent or failure to level the appliance.
  1. Do not use hand-washing liquid detergents. This type of detergent is not intended for automatic dishwashers and will cause excessive sudsing and possibly leaks. Poor washing and drying performance will result.
  2. The dishwasher must be leveled properly from front to back and side to side to ensure proper drainage and avoid damage and malfunction.
  3. If suds are visible, pour 4-7 ounces of milk in a shallow bowl, place it on the upper rack, and run the appliance on the AUTO cycle. The fat content in the milk will give the suds something to bond to, allowing it to rinse out properly.
  4. If you always use the right detergent, the dishwasher is level, and there are no suds in the tub, then RESET the power and run a cycle again with proper detergent.
CL – Child Lock This is not an error code. This code means that the CHILD LOCK or CONTROL LOCK feature has been activated. When activated, buttons cannot change except the washer’s door and the POWER button. To activate the child lock:

  • Open the dishwasher door.
  • Press the POWER button.
  • Select the cycle (and desired options).
  • Press and hold the RINSE and SPRAY buttons for three seconds.

AE, E1 You have a leak inside your dishwasher that is activating the float switch. Before you can start using your dishwasher again, you will have to locate and fix the cause of the leak.

  2. Remove the bottom rack, pour a gallon of water into the bottom of the dishwasher. If the water level pools to either side of the tub the unit is not leveled correctly.
  3. Check the door gasket for grime buildup or damage. Look for any food/grease buildup on the gasket or the area of the tub where the gasket seals. Remove any grime that is present, as this can result in leaking if the door cannot seal properly.
  4. Once the gasket is clean, dry up any water in the drain pan to clear the error code.
  5. If the door seal is damaged or torn, this will require service. Contact us for assistance.
  6. Inspect the spray arms for any buildup or blockages. If grime is present, remove the spray arms and clean with a soft brush and warm soapy water. Reinstall the spray arm and dry out the drain pan to clear the error code.

  9. It is recommended NOT to use dishwashing liquid inside your dishwasher. Dishwashing liquid is super concentrated compared to dishwashing detergent and can produce too much suds, causing the water level inside the unit to overflow.

IE Indicates water in the unit did not reach high enough level after 10 minutes of filling.
  1. If the unit was recently installed, be certain that the water supply valve is turned ON and the water line is not kinked or bent.
  2. Water pressure must be between 20-120 PSI. If pressure is too low, contact us for assistance.
  3. If drain hose outlet is installed lower than the base of your dishwasher, it is possible that this could cause premature draining.

The height of the drain hose end must be at least 10 inches from the bottom of the dishwasher to avoid water being siphoned from the tub.

  4. If dishwasher is installed where it could be exposed to temperatures below freezing, it is possible for parts of the dishwasher to freeze. Melt frozen parts by soaking a towel in warm water and wrapping it around the frozen area. Once the frozen area has thawed the dishwasher should be able to operate.
  5. Check the leveling of your dishwasher as improper leveling may cause IE.
  6. Flood safe hoses and check-valves may interrupt water supply, due to high water pressure. It is recommended to remove such devices in favor of standard inlet hose.

Inspect the water line for kinks or bends that may be prevent proper filling.

If you perform all the above steps and the the IE error code persists, the unit will require repair service. Contact us for assistance.

  2. Check the drain hose. The dishwasher cannot drain properly if the drain hose is kinked. Inspect drain hose. If hose is pinched or kinked, straighten hose and run a test cycle.
  3. OE is triggered when the dishwasher is not draining properly. Check the drain air gap or in-sink disposal for debris and clogs.
  4. Is this a newly installed dishwasher or new garbage disposal?
    1. If the OE error code displayed on the first cycle, this indicates an installation issue with the drain hose. It may be either kinked, too high, or too long. This should be corrected by the installer.
    2. If this is new garbage disposal, the opening of the dishwasher drain hose may still be plugged. The plug must be removed by either an installer or plumber. Contact us for assistance.

  • Do NOT use extension cords.

  • Do NOT use extension cords.
